UK Roofing Market Sees Increase of 7%, Report Reveals

A recent report conducted by AMA Research has revealed that the overall UK roofing market has seen an increase of 7% in value terms, last year.

Since 2012, the demand for roof coverings has been buoyed by the development in the housebuilding sector and domestic Renovation Maintenance Improvement (RMI), along with amplified production in a host of commercial and industrial new build and refurbishment markets.

Overall market trends are typically determined by demand level for concrete roof tiles and metal panel systems, which when combined, made up in the region of half the total sales in 2016.

In terms of the distribution of roofing materials, this varies largely between the different product sectors. For example, builders’ merchants and roofing merchants are the two focal routes to market for suppliers of concrete and clay tiles, while independent importers and distribution networks are the key channels for roofing slates; this is mainly due to the majority of products being imported. When it comes to flat roofing systems, they are mainly utilised on commercial buildings, so the main channels come through roofing merchants and direct sales.

Additionally, the direct supply from the manufacturer is the core route to market for profiled metal roofing projects, predominantly those requiring bespoke design, structures and close collaborations with manufacturers.

Director at AMA research, Keith Taylor said of the news: “The housebuilding market remains very positive in the sense that demand levels are high, and the Government has indicated that it wants to support the affordable sector with various schemes, something which should have a positive impact on the roofing sector. In addition, a large part of the roofing sector is driven by repair and maintenance and as such the market value has good support, even if the wider construction market turns more negative.”

Bearing these factors in mind, experts have set out a forecast of stabilisation in the demand for roofing products over the next four years, up until 2021, with more positive market growth in the latter part of the forecast period, reflecting some improvement in confidence and the economy as the impact of the EU exit settles down. As such the overall market is forecast grow by a very modest 4% between 2016 and 2021.
